ĠENN team up with Aidan Moffat on atmospheric new single Jaguar Sun
ĠENN have shared their first release of 2026, Jaguar Sun, a sprawling new collaboration with Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap. The single arrives via Mogwai’s Rock Action Records and will also receive a 12-inch release.
Running beyond the six-minute mark, Jaguar Sun finds the Anglo-Maltese quartet leaning into a slow-building, shadowy groove. Leona Farrugia’s vocals move between close-mic whispers and more expansive melodic passages, while Moffat’s unmistakably weathered delivery gives the track an extra layer of unease.
A duet imagined from the first jam
Farrugia says the idea of involving Moffat was present from the earliest stages of the song’s development.
“We started jamming out the song and immediately I was intrigued by the idea of a duet. I could see the vision,” she says. “When it developed even more, I could really hear Aidan’s voice… almost like a god coming from the heavens. I imagined the juxtaposition of the grit of Aidan’s voice but also his storytelling and aura in general.”
The pair subsequently exchanged emails across a summer, discussing the music, books and wider culture shaping the track. Farrugia says the collaboration became meaningful because both artists were willing to “stop and think with you, and create something with you that is worthwhile and significant to both”.
Lyrically, Jaguar Sun circles ideas of freedom, distance and the unsettling sensation of being an observer in one’s own life. “At the time I wrote the lyrics I had a lot of questions on whether one can really be ‘free’ and what the act of ‘freedom’ really is,” Farrugia explains. “The idea that sometimes we are mere observers or simply a protagonist watching from afar – AKA life being acted out.”
Moffat connected those themes with Einstein’s block universe model and the philosophical questions around free will. “Is free will real? Are our stories already written?” he says. “It seemed to suit Leona’s themes well, so I recorded the vocal on my laptop in an empty studio room while the Arab Strap album was being mixed next door.”
Literature, cinema and fractured sound
The title of Jaguar Sun draws on Italo Calvino’s unfinished novel Under the Jaguar Sun, while the band also cite Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Alice Rohrwacher’s film La Chimera and Low’s Double Negative among the work informing its creation.
The single was co-produced by the band alongside Johnny Hostile, Johnny Breakwell and Tom Hill.
UK shows follow European run
ĠENN will take Jaguar Sun across Europe in October before returning to the UK for six dates through October and November, including shows in Leeds, London, Brighton and Southampton. Tickets are on sale now.
