Had Sandy unveil video for I Hate My Parents And I Wanna Learn How To Swim

“The lyrics sit somewhere between smoking cigarettes to try fit in, and frustration with contrasting feelings in a relationship – all in all, the essence of being a teenager.”

Had Sandy tap into teenage unease on new I Hate My Parents And I Wanna Learn How To Swim video

Had Sandy have shared the video for their new single I Hate My Parents And I Wanna Learn How To Swim, a ragged, emotionally charged cut released through Brighton indie Sugar-Free Records.

The clip captures the Brighton four-piece performing outdoors, matching the song’s restless surge with a dose of open-air disorder. It was filmed by Harrison Milton and edited by the band’s drummer Elliott Scambler.

A title built for teenage turmoil

Built around urgent guitars, keys and an unvarnished vocal delivery, I Hate My Parents And I Wanna Learn How To Swim draws on the tension and release of second-wave emo while keeping its focus fixed on adolescence, alienation and the confused emotional weather of growing up.

Vocalist and guitarist Jude Allenby says: “The title actually means something entirely different to the lyrical content of the song, but accurately paints a nostalgic picture of teen angst and the innocence of a misunderstood kid.

“However, the lyrics sit somewhere between smoking cigarettes to try fit in, and frustration with contrasting feelings in a relationship – all in all, the essence of being a teenager – and the song tells this musical story.

“I love the idea that someone’s nostalgia can be someone else’s present fixation. We’ve had a few people saying that our songs ‘make them feel 16 again’, and that’s what this song is meant for.”

Recorded in a Brighton basement flat

The single is another self-contained effort from the band, with Allenby handling engineering, mixing and mastering. Everything apart from drums was recorded in Allenby and keyboard player Natasha O’Flynn’s Brighton basement flat, while O’Flynn also takes charge of most of the group’s merchandise and artwork.

Had Sandy’s current line-up is completed by bassist and vocalist Louis Tong and Scambler on drums. The band recently took the single on the road for a run of self-booked shows with Prom, alongside an appearance at Burn It Down Festival.
