Bad Waitress announce In The Hollow and share jagged new single Lovin’ Kind
Bad Waitress have announced their first album in five years, In The Hollow, and unveiled its feral lead single Lovin’ Kind.
The Toronto quartet’s new record arrives on 30 October via Stomp Records, with Lovin’ Kind serving as a terse, two-and-a-half-minute blast of attraction, resentment and self-sabotage. The track lands alongside a video that leans into the band’s wired, confrontational energy.
Produced by Bad Waitress and recorded with engineer Josh Korody at Toronto’s Wychwood Sound, the song finds vocalist Kali-Ann Butala turning a love-song premise into something far more suspicious. “Tell you I love you / Then destroy you,” she sings before the refrain, “I’m not the lovin’ kind,” arrives less as an admission than a warning.
A love song with its guard up
Lovin’ Kind retains the scrape and snap of Bad Waitress’ punk attack, while pressing deeper into the unease at the centre of the forthcoming album. Its guitars lurch around a punishing rhythm section, with melody, sneer and menace colliding in a track that never settles on whether its central relationship is romance or mutual ruin.
The single marks the first new full-length material from the band since 2021’s No Taste. While their earlier work often drew its force from immediate, close-quarters punk intensity, In The Hollow is described as a more inward-looking record shaped by isolation, fractured relationships, identity and the uneasy distance between present selves and old memories.
That sense of dislocation also reaches into the record’s imagery. The album draws on the Northwest Territories and Pacific Northwest, landscapes connected to members of the group, where dark forests and vast wilderness become part of its emotional terrain.
