New single ‘Monotony’ out today with music video
Midlands trio Sadness & Complete Disappointment are ready to bring forth their spooky, gloomy, grunge. Their debut EP, which is led by the band’s angelic voices, and is (quite ironically) titled ‘Fun’, will be self-released by the band on 05 March. Their approach and aesthetic follows in the footsteps of audio powerhouses such as Sonic Youth, Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins and Hole.
‘Monotony’ is the latest track to be revealed from the EP and it’s bleak to say the least. “We’re so fucking bored,” says drummer and lead vocalist Esme. “Even before these constant lockdowns we had already ceased to live and were existing in this never-ending cycle of something too benign to be called anguish, trapped in a small town, in a small room. We can paint a sparkly visual through our smartphones, the pocket-sized porthole into other people’s individual cells, and this gives us a taste of make-believe, an idea that we are something better, a chemical reaction in our primitive minds, just enough to take off the edge. Dopamine, serotonin, a forced smile and an edited photograph and it’s never enough. A like button and a glimmer of something akin to fulfilment in the vaguest way, but it never is fulfilment, it can not replace true and honest human connection. Every day is the same and every day is so ugly.”
The band released their very first single late last year. ‘Status’ is about the absolute rotten core of the patriarchy and the futility of how pre-determined status is so prevalent in our culture. It’s typically vitriolic of Sadness & Complete Disappointment, who’ve found inspiration for this first collection of compositions from the deepest darkest depths of reality.
Sadness & Complete Disappointment were formed through self doubt and abject misery. Esme writes the words and the melodies, bringing that bleakness. Bek / Beka is bassist, vocal harmoniser, she makes the videos and raises the hens. Kit (they/them) plays the guitars and brings the riffs. They write big tunes and are a staggeringly accomplished multi-instrumentalist.
