Sugar’s new documentary captures the band’s early days and long-awaited live return
Sugar will unveil Changes: The Story of Sugar, a 20-minute documentary charting the group’s history, on YouTube on Thursday 6 August at 5pm BST.
The film arrives following the band’s first live shows together in decades, including sold-out residencies in London and New York this past May. An online YouTube afterparty with Bob Mould will follow immediately after the premiere.
Produced and directed by Rob Hatch-Miller, whose previous work includes Other Music and Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows, the documentary was filmed during Sugar’s recent run at New York’s Webster Hall. It combines new interviews with Mould, bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis, alongside archival clips and passages from Mould’s memoir, See A Little Light: The Trail Of Rage And Melody.
Unearthed footage from Sugar’s first show
Among the archival material is previously unseen footage, shot by Lance Bangs, of Sugar’s first-ever performance at Athens, Georgia’s 40 Watt Club. The film also revisits Mould’s 1991 European acoustic tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana, plus appearances by the band on MTV’s 120 Minutes.
Hatch-Miller said: “It seems to have been one of the happiest eras of Bob’s life. We found so much great archival footage, like Lance Bangs’ never-before-seen video of the band’s first show ever at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, footage of Bob’s solo acoustic European festival tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana in 1991, and so many clips of Bob and the band on MTV’s 120 Minutes, where they were so warmly embraced and brought to a mainstream television audience.”
Mould adds in the film: “I tend to be identified most with Hüsker Dü and my solo albums, but few know the half of how much fun I had with Sugar.”

US dates begin in Denver
Sugar’s Love You Even Still World Tour resumes in North America on 11 August, opening in Denver before taking in 24 US dates. The itinerary includes three sold-out nights at Minneapolis’ First Avenue, festival appearances at Riot Fest and Ohana Festival, and an already sold-out closing show in Athens, Georgia.
A portion of every ticket sale will be donated to LGBTQ+ youth suicide-prevention and crisis-intervention organisation The Trevor Project. Tickets and further tour information are available here.
