Yee Loi take aim at online cults on new single Miraclist

“The song digs into the dangers of false prophets and modern demagogues preaching fake promises to vulnerable people. The single’s about getting people to think for themselves instead of drinking the Kool-Aid.”

Yee Loi confront online demagogues on new single Miraclist ahead of debut album

Yee Loi have released Miraclist, the fourth single from their forthcoming debut album, Flicks, licks, party tricks, due out on 15 January 2027 via Modern Sky UK.

The new track turns its attention towards the modern-day cult leader: online personalities trading in certainty, hysteria and empty promises. It arrives as the sibling trio of Rose, Matilda and Don Don reach the end of a 14-date UK tour supporting Transvision Vamp, having been selected by the band’s singer Wendy James.

A warning from the desert

Written during a trip to Utah, Miraclist draws its atmosphere from the collision of desert landscapes and a more ominous undercurrent. Lead singer and drummer Matilda said: “We wrote Miraclist while out in Utah – where the mountain scenery meets the desert. It’s a landscape with this dark, almost cultish undertone. The concept for the lyrics just hit me out of nowhere in the mountains.

“The song digs into the dangers of false prophets and modern demagogues preaching fake promises to vulnerable people. It started with an obsession over old-school religious fanatics like David Koresh but today those same figures are internet influencers creating internet frenzies. The single’s about getting people to think for themselves instead of drinking the Kool-Aid.”

Sonically, the single follows the band’s jagged punk instincts while bringing a darker, swampier edge to the fore. Guitarist Rose points to classic Thin Lizzy, alongside The Gun Club’s Miami, as reference points for its voodoo-tinged mood.

“Musically, it’s raw swamp-punk rock and roll,” Rose said. “We were listening to a lot of classic Thin Lizzy and The Gun Club’s Miami album – capturing that dark, voodoo-inspired desert vibe. People have said they pick up on early ’90s Riot Grrrl energy like L7 or Hole in our sound too.”
