Teenage Wrist explore a heavier edge on A Different Shine EP

“There was complete freedom for everyone to toss in ideas at any point.”

Teenage Wrist unveil A Different Shine EP with unsettling Twist My Tongue video

Teenage Wrist have released their new EP, A Different Shine, marking the duo’s first new music since 2023’s Still Love. The three-track release arrives with a video for Twist My Tongue, the EP’s abrasive centrepiece.

Produced and mixed by Ken Andrews of Failure, A Different Shine finds Marshall Gallagher and Anthony Salazar pushing their melodic shoegaze instincts into thicker, more distorted territory. Across its compact runtime, the EP moves between heavy grooves, hazy guitar textures and bursts of grunge-weighted noise.

Twist My Tongue leads the release with a suitably strange visual companion. Built around what Gallagher describes as a “spidery” riff originally written by Andrews, the track carries a tense, spacey fuzz beneath its churning guitars and bruised vocal lines.

Gallagher says the song’s lyrical direction was informed by “a podcast I heard about the CIA seeding drugs into the music community”, lending the track’s already disorientating atmosphere an extra layer of paranoia.

Ken Andrews brings a left-field touch

The sessions saw Teenage Wrist working closely with Andrews, whose production work and own catalogue had long been an influence on the band. Gallagher says: “We’ve been huge fans of his production and all his projects for a long time.”

The collaboration is felt throughout the EP: opener Wishing Well arrives on a muscular rhythmic pulse, while closing track Don’t Mind balances its softer melodic pull with crashing drums and a more forceful guitar attack.

Andrews says the recording process allowed ideas to develop freely in the studio. “There was complete freedom for everyone to toss in ideas at any point,” he says. “Getting to work with a band that can make ideas come to life in the studio so quickly was a real treat for me.”
