Rhinestone Cowboy Rides as Knives Drop Debut Album

Knives Ignite with Debut Album Glitter and Explosive Video for ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’

Bristol’s uncompromising noise sextet Knives have dropped their much-anticipated debut album, Glitter, out now via Marshall Records, and The Wire is already hailing it as “very necessary.” To celebrate, the band has unleashed the chaotic, high-energy video for fan-favourite single ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’—a track that’s quickly becoming the centrepiece of their live set.

Glitter captures everything that defines Knives: experimental bravado, genre-defying soundscapes, and a fierce message of inclusivity. Recorded with producer Dominic Bailey-Clay at Giant Wafer Studios in the Welsh Valleys, the album smashes together influences from hardcore, post-punk, alt-rock, and experimental jazz into something both abrasive and beautifully defiant.

“Our favourite part about releasing music is getting to tour,” says drummer Erin Cook, speaking on the energy of their live shows. “At our headline show in Lille, we had loads of crowd surfers and people in the mosh pit… After our album releases, we’re heading to Europe several times and hitting loads of festivals over the summer.”

Knives’ Mission: More Than Music

Formed in 2022 by vocalist Jay Schottlander and drummer Erin Cook during their time at university in Bristol, Knives quickly grew into a collective—six musicians united by a shared goal of shaking up the alternative landscape. Their songs are statements, built for the fringes, with lyrics and live shows creating space for marginalised communities, including people of colour and the LGBTQ+ community.

“We’re all completely different people, from different backgrounds,” adds bassist Ben Marshall. “Now we have so many queer and people of colour at our shows—it feels nice to have cultivated a place like that.”

That spirit is felt across Glitter’s 11 blistering tracks—from the raw punch of “The Dagger” to the genre-surfing chaos of “Post Macho” and the jagged elegance of “Ultraviolet.” Every track feels like a manifesto, delivered with teeth-baring intensity and unmatched musical interplay.
