Cloud Nothings announce heavy new album What Kind of Hell Did You Survive? alongside Death Keeps Me Alive
Cloud Nothings have announced their new album, What Kind of Hell Did You Survive?, due out via Pure Noise Records on 29 January 2027.
The nine-track record finds the band pushing their sound into more metallic territory, trading in some of their familiar indie rock edges for blown-out riffs, rapid-fire drums and a more confrontational weight. Produced and engineered by Seth Manchester, whose previous work includes Battles, Lightning Bolt and The Body, the album is being billed as their most aggressive release to date.

Its first preview arrives in the form of Death Keeps Me Alive, a pummelling new single driven by serrated guitars, galloping rhythms and Dylan Baldi’s increasingly ragged vocal delivery. The accompanying video is available now.
A darker and heavier direction
Baldi said the new track takes the perspective of an ever-present destructive force.
“Lyrically Death Keeps Me Alive is from the point of view of a lurking evil power that never gets fully defeated in the world and feeds off of death, war and hate, which is kind of a fun generically ‘metal’ thing to sing about,” he said.
“I hope people hear this song and get excited for what the rest of the record could possibly sound like, and recognise that this is going to be a new version of Cloud Nothings that didn’t really have a precedent prior to this recording.”
Baldi has cited Queens of the Stone Age, Motörhead, Earth and Electric Wizard among the direct influences informing the record’s heavier approach. The lyrics, meanwhile, take in cruel governments, community and a broad sense of rage at the current state of the world.
“The album is our attempt to pay homage to the heavy rock music we’ve been listening to over the last few years,” Baldi explained. “We were feeling a little pigeonholed in the indie rock world and wanted to make a change in our sound that revealed a different facet of our interests and abilities.”
