Split Dogs confront the past on new single Suffer

“It’s about carrying the weight of abuse long after it’s ended… ultimately it’s about taking your power back, knowing your worth, and moving forward.”

Split Dogs share personal new single Suffer from forthcoming Nice ‘N’ Rough album

Split Dogs have released Suffer, a new single drawn from their forthcoming second album Nice ‘N’ Rough, which arrives on 25 September via Venn Records.

The Bristol punk rock four-piece pair the track with a homemade video steeped in the smoke-machine haze of 1970s occult rock and 1980s metal. Its lyrics, meanwhile, find vocalist Harry Martinez addressing the enduring effects of abuse with unusual directness.

“It’s about carrying the weight of abuse long after it’s ended,” Martinez says. “The song deals with the struggle of letting the past dictate your happiness, but ultimately it’s about taking your power back, knowing your worth, and moving forward.”

The band shot the video using a green screen, moody lighting and a graveyard location, with Jess Rushby appearing in the clip and styling from Rushby and chainmail artist Issy Jones completing its deliberately old-school metal visual world.

A VHS-fuelled record from a former police station

Nice ‘N’ Rough was recorded at The Station House in Leeds, housed in a repurposed Victorian police station. Working with producer Jonah Falco and engineer James Atkinson, the group drew inspiration from the studio’s substantial VHS library, including Heavy Metal, A Nightmare on Elm Street and a Tina Turner live tape.
