Scowl Ascends – Are We All Angels Heralds a Fierce Evolution

Scowl Embrace the Ethereal and the Brutal on Are We All Angels

Santa Cruz hardcore outfit Scowl have released their anticipated Dead Oceans debut, Are We All Angels. This record expands the boundaries of punk without losing its bite. Accompanying the release is a surreal, tightly wound video for the single “Fantasy,” directed by Louise de Nexon. The band will make their Late-Night TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on April 9th.

Blending sharp aggression with glimmers of melody and emotional nuance, Are We All Angels pushes Scowl into new territory. Produced by Will Yip (Turnstile, Title Fight) and mixed by Rich Costey (Vampire Weekend, Fiona Apple), the album distills punk fury through a kaleidoscopic lens. Frontwoman Kat Moss leans into a broader vocal palette—sometimes snarling, sometimes shimmering—while the band’s instrumentals evolve through noise rock, alt-pop, and snarling hardcore.

“The majority of us were really not proficient musicians when this band started,” says Moss. “But now… we have a better idea of what we want to do.”

From Punk Roots to Polished Chaos

Scowl’s musical DNA is still soaked in the ethos of punk and hardcore. Their influences run from Bad Brains and Negative Approach to Hole, Sonic Youth, and even Billie Eilish. This diverse palette shines through on the album’s 11 tracks, including previously released singles “Special,” “B.A.B.E,” “Tonight (I’m Afraid),” and “Not Hell Not Heaven.”

Bassist Bailey Lupo describes the process as the band’s “most collaborative to date,” with every member contributing ideas that helped shape this layered, genre-bending record.

Watch: “Fantasy” Video

The video for “Fantasy” sets the band in an eerie, neon-lit arcade that spirals from dreamlike escapism into claustrophobic unrest. It’s a striking visual metaphor for the album’s thematic tension: beauty blooming through pressure, melody surfacing through mayhem.
