Scowl Drop “Tonight (I’m Afraid)” from Forthcoming Album Are We All Angels
Santa Cruz hardcore force Scowl have just unveiled “Tonight (I’m Afraid),” the final single before their much-anticipated album Are We All Angels arrives on April 4 via Dead Oceans. A track that leans into vulnerability while retaining the band’s trademark intensity, “Tonight (I’m Afraid)” thrives on anthemic choruses, punchy basslines, and Kat Moss’ visceral screams.

The song arrives with a flipbook-style music video illustrated by Adam Fuchs (Adult Swim), adding a unique visual element to the track’s emotional weight. It follows previously released singles “B.A.B.E,” “Not Heaven, Not Hell,” and “Special.”
Pushing Hardcore’s Boundaries
Produced by Will Yip (Turnstile, Title Fight), Are We All Angels sees Scowl expanding their sound while keeping their punk ethos intact. The album, mixed by Rich Costey (My Chemical Romance, Fiona Apple), tackles themes of alienation, grief, and the shifting landscape of their place within hardcore.
Moss’ vocal evolution is especially striking, balancing raw power with moments of unexpected delicacy. Drawing inspiration from many artists—Billie Eilish, Radiohead, Julien Baker, and Car Seat Headrest—she crafts performances that break beyond the traditional hardcore mould. The band’s influences remain firmly rooted in Negative Approach, Bad Brains, Hole, Mudhoney, Garbage, the Pixies, and more, making for an album that challenges and embraces hardcore’s foundations.
“We still might not know what we’re doing, but we have a better idea of what we want to do,” Moss admits.
A Scene-Defining Moment
Scowl’s presence in the modern punk and hardcore landscape is undeniable. They’ve shared stages with Limp Bizkit, Destroy Boys, Militarie Gun, A Day to Remember, Zulu, and more, and they’ve appeared at Coachella, Reading & Leeds, Primavera, and Outbreak Festival. With Are We All Angels, they continue to push the boundaries of what a hardcore band can be.
